Hints and Tips

They say turn the tap off when not actively using it when cleaning your teeth. You only need to turn it on to wet the bristles and paste just prior to brushing, when rinsing the brush and getting the water to rinse your mouth, then a quick flush of the basin, unless you use the toilet like a spittoon then go to the toilet after, I've done that one before, an extremely useful way when sick and constantly coughing up phlegm as it is easier to flush.

On the topic of toilets the old saying if it's yellow let it mellow if it's brown flush it down we have found that there is no need to flush all night after going to bed unless it's brown, further more without offending any noses we have successfully left the yellow mellow for up to four uses before flushing when women have been involved in the usage because of the paper use, and you still get away flushing all that with a half flush in most cases, even the brown generally only needs a half flush in a 6/3 toilet.

Have tea or coffee left in the pot? Don't pour it down the drain, let it cool then pour it on the garden, in the compost or the worm farm. Do the same with the water you rinse it with.

Another thing I do with dish water that is not oily nor too dirty is get a clean dusting rag, normally an old dish cloth, wet it ring it out, and dust the things that can be wet dusted, even the wooden items as you can always polish them later when doing the rest of the dusting/ cleaning.

An old trick for water saving that I learned from an Aunt of my Mother that I used to use, until I got my worm farm that is, is to put the used teabags and used tea on my pot plants, it is quite an effective mini-mulch. Though you can do this with coffee I don't recommend it as on hot days the pots tend to self ignite.

While waiting for that dripping tap to get fixed put a container under it to catch the drips so they can be used productively, it also helps in ensuring the repair is done instead of constantly being put off and possibly ending up costing you excess rates.

Renters can often find themselves in a place with cheap or inefficient fittings. Sometimes it is very useful to have your own spare taps, good quality of course. What you do then is you first note and report the faulty tap then if nothing is done you replace it with your spares. When you leave you just swap them back. This we have found is often the best and cheapest way to fix the leaky tap that seams to eat washers quickly or solve that leaking back-flow problem on the garden tap.

Cleaning more often with milder or more natural products not only reduces the need to use the more harmful products that do negatively effect your health but also reduce the amount of water used to clean as the need to rinse the cleaning product is often reduced if not entirely eliminated. A little each day is the better way I say.

T clean windows and mirrors, use a window mop and squeegee and bucket set, just like the commercial window cleaners use. Then we found the most effective window cleaning recipe for the area. Now 15 years later I still use this formula available at www.ausis.info set and a rag to wipe dry the squeegee to clean all my windows and mirrors. There are no streaks if you use the squeegee correctly. The best part is the cleaning mix can be used to clean the bath or toilet etc, sparkly clean when your done and you only have one rag to wash many uses later.
