Another way I save using dish water is when I clean the fridge I do the dishes
either just before or just after washing out the fridge with the dish water.
Being there is generally only two of us at home I find with using the above
rinsing method for the dishes I also can often get away with only having to do
the dishes once a day which I have measured out that I can do this with 12
liters on average. Ten for the sink, two for the rinsing. The only difference of
having guests is I do more dishes and sometimes that means more often, but often
it means two sinks of dish water.
When using an at home reverse osmosis system, we do not have the pressure
storage tank that looks like a gas cylinder, instead we use water bottles and a
water well to store and serve our potable and drinking water from, this is very
effective at making the users of the water not waist the water by taking more
than they really want or need and pore the rest down the drain, even without you
having to say a thing to any visitors other than say yes to their request of can
they have a drink or some water.
Where possible, and that is most of the time in most cases, wear clothes more
than once before washing them, this can be easily achieved by having you cloths
grouped, home, work/school, shopping and good wear, and changing from / to them
as soon as you get home or get ready to go out. I found I could get 2-3 wears
out of work or school cloths and up to four for good wear, before I had to wash
them. If I hadn't left school and sold the uniforms, like much of my good wear
it is still good over ten even twenty years later for some items, I even have a
skirt I wear shopping that I have had for over 20 years ( since I was 10) that I
used to wear to school as a long skirt. Just by not washing it every time it was
worn. This reduces the number of wash loads you need to do.
We also found most cloths don't have to be sorted to colours and whites now days
so being we have a 7.7kg washing machine we collect our washing till we have at
least 5 kg before doing a wash where possible, even most delicates are not all
that delicate and can go in a special bag that gets put in with the rest of the
wash. Of course there are those items that no matter what you can only wash them
with like items.
If you have air conditioning put a bucket or some other water collection /
storage container under where the water condensation exits the system and use it
for things other than making a useless puddle under the system.
If you have your carpets and furnishing cleaned by extraction method see if you
can get the person cleaning to put the waste water on your lawn, in most cases
the products used are safe for this to be done. Even if you use a DIY system and
do it yourself this is the case more often than not.
A miniature dust pan set, or crumb brush and pan are a good investment when used
correctly. You use the brush to sweep the crumbs, or spilt flour, sugar etc.
into the pan then if you need to wash the remnants of the spill you wont need to
use as much water to rinse the cloth as you wont have to rinse as much from the
cloth.
