To save water in the home you need to first count how much water is used to know
what and how much you need to reduce your usage by. To do this follow the simple
steps below. It is recommended you do this for about four weeks / a month so you
can calculate your daily average as well.
A:
1 Day 1. Read your water meter before you go to bed tonight or at a specific
time say 6 pm
2 Day 2. Read your water meter at the same time. Take the lower reading from the
higher reading which will give you the amount of liters of water you have used.
3 At the end of 4 or 12 weeks take your first reading from your last and divide
the result by the number of days in the period the readings cover, i.e. 28 or
84. This is your daily average usage.
4 Providing you stick to this pattern and advice the government will not get you
for excess water. You will also have proof of your usage should you be trying to
prove it to them or your landlord.
Hints and Tips
Where possible measure the water you use. Use the normal amount you would at
this point. If you can't measure the amount estimate or better still calculate
how much. Now you can figure out where you can start saving water.
The kitchen is one of the high water usage areas. When rinsing dishes cups etc.
remember the water used to rinse one coffee cup can be reused to rinse up to
three others, bowls for plates and vice versa.
